Samurai were not confined to a purely military role, however. Some samurai became scholars of great renown.
While many nations publicly display their regalia of sovereignty, there is one notable exception: no visit to Japan will ever include a trip to see the Japanese crown jewels.
The three items – the mirror, the sword and the jewel – were, and still are, the legitimators of kingship: the symbols and guarantees of the eternity of the imperial throne.
The 10th century is the time that we first see the term ‘samurai’, literally ‘those who serve’, being used in a purely military context. At first it referred to men who went up to the imperial capital, Kyoto, to provide guard duty. In time it began to denote a military man who served any powerful landlord.
They are defined in the modern imagination by the deadly swords that they carried and their famous code: bushido, the way of the warrior.
The samurai were the legendary warriors of old Japan who led noble and violent lives governed by the demands of honour, personal integrity and loyalty.
