From the moment I realized what was happening to us, I was convinced that they were stronger than we were. It’s all about mindset. In hindsight, I think that if they’d been trying to steal our jackets, I would have reacted very differently. I wasn’t foolhardy, but I could be pretty reckless. But in that instant, I felt I was a woman, utterly and only a woman, in a way I’ve never felt before or since. Saving my own skin didn’t give me the right to wound a man. I think I’d have had the same reaction if it had been just one guy assaulting me. It was the act of rape itself that turned me back into a woman, into someone essentially vulnerable.
