St. John Chrysostom (John Golden-Mouth, c. 347-407) called woman more harmful than any savage beast. St. Clement of Alexandria wrote that every woman should be overwhelmed with shame because of her gender. And the Church council of Macon in seriously debated the question of whether women could be considered fully human. After much argument for and against, the question was decided in favor of women’s humanity by a vote of 32 for, 31 against.
