After 13,8 billion years of cosmic evolution, development has accelerated dramatically here on Earth: Life 1.0 arrived about 4 billion years ago, Life 2.0 (we humans) arrived about a hundred millennia ago and many AI researchers think that Life 3.0 may arrive during the coming century, perhaps even during our lifetime, spawned by progress in AI.

Hume, writing nearly a century after Locke, completes the trajectory of empiricist thinking about animals by a2rming his predecessors’ views about animal cognition and developing a theory of propery rights that places animals on a par with plants and slaves. Unlike Hobbes and Locke, Hume does not address the question of human dominion over animals directly. His suggestion that “the life of a man is of no greater importance to the universe than that of an oyster” points toward the possibiliy that Hume had a diferent view of dominion than his forbears.28 But Hume’s writings on morals make it clear that he is ultimately unconcerned with the point of view of the universe. His sole concern is the standpoint of human relations and the need, recognized by the social contract theorists, to provide human beings with a motivation for respecting the principles of reciprociy and mutual respect.
