"She expected the world but it flew away from her reach."
“Your touch.” His voice, deep and grainy from sleep, startled her. She pulled her hand back but he snatched it with lightning-quick reflexes, placing it on the scar again. “My touch?” “I didn't realize how much I missed your touch. You gave a man starved a feast every day until he forgot what hunger felt like, and then took it away.”

She didn’t go back with him that night. But he stayed the night. He stayed the night, just holding her, letting her cry, letting her hit him, but not letting her away from him.

BOOOOORING
Hard Times reminded me of Huxley's Brave New World. Both portray a dystopian city. The difference is that Hard Times is too in your face. Dickens' fictional city Coketown, homes people of radically different points of view and means of living when the circus stops over the town for a few months. There are people obsessed with

Yueh turned away to hide his face from her. If only it were possible to hate these people instead of love them!
Ode to nightingale
My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: 'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot, But being too happy in thine happiness,— That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees

“Why are you blushing?” He took my face in his hands, which made my blush far worse, considering I couldn’t look away from him. “I thought I’d fucked all the shame out of you already?” He kissed my forehead, and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. “Apparently I need to corrupt you a bit more, baby girl.”

Amara, 18 years
Keeping her face to the ground, Amara walked away from the clearing without a word, wondering if there would ever be an end to the pain, realizing that there wasn't much difference between true evil and true love. They snuck up on the vulnerable, gripped them by the throat, and left a realm of ruin behind.
“Why did you protect me, Leon?” He looked appalled at my question. He shook his head, but I insisted. “Why are you protecting me? Why? What makes me any different than the last girl?” He was really scowling now; his hands were working inside his jacket, as if he was clenching and unclenching his fists. His jaw, too, was tensing. But I let the question hang. I wanted an answer. There was a hell of a lot going on that I didn’t understand, but him? Us? Whatever the hell that meant? I wanted to know. “I decided I wanted you,” he said simply, but the words barely made their way out from between his teeth. “I saw you, and...and I felt…” He winced, as if the word stung. Felt. What did a demon feel? “Not anger. Not hatred or fury. You…” He turned his face away, staring back into the trees. “You’re a light in the dark, and I’ve been in the dark a very long time.”

Tristan, 8 years old.
The horror he saw in her eyes killed something inside him. His jaw trembled as he stepped towards her, wanting to rush into her arms and have her tell him everything would be okay. She jerked back from him, her mouth agape in terror. "Get away from me."

Giving Attention To A Stranger
“He only knew that at each attempt to make her share his life, his thoughts, his sense of beauty, she shied away from him like a frightened horse.”

Being alone with her is like opening a door away from normal life and then closing it behind him.
“Sorry, the last time you hugged my wife, it lasted five seconds. That should last you for the next five years.” Cole gaped at him, before turning his attention to me. “I swear our Mama didn’t raise him like this.” I grinned. “I happen to like him exactly as he is.” Walker blew me a kiss and I reached out and pretended to catch it. Cole made a gagging noise like he was about to throw up. “You guys are so sweet it makes me sick.” Walker smiled unrepentantly and skated away. “Keep everyone away from my wife, Elaine,” he reminded her, and I swear her muscles hulked out even more as she stood there.

SHE IS SO IN LOVE WITH HIM
She knew Jacks was far too dangerous a person to truly fall for. But she could no longer deny that it was happening. She couldn’t deny that she wanted him. Just enough to keep her from pulling away every time he touched her. Enough to keep his name near the tip of her tongue even when he wasn’t in the room. The physical attraction had always been there, but her pull toward him had been increasing ever since the night they’d jumped off that cliff together. Because she’d never actually stopped falling.

Is this what madness felt like? She lay back beside me and I just stared at her in awe. I was so gone for this perfect fucking girl, and I was never going to let her go. Ever. She was mine, and I'd never allow her to slip away. The mere thought of losing her, of someone else even daring to lay eyes on her, ignited a dark, all-consuming obsession within me. It was a hunger, a need to possess her completely, body and soul. I wanted to envelop her in darkness, where there was no escape from my grasp, and she’d be forever bound to me. She wasn’t just everything; she was the only thing, and I’d descend to the depths of madness to ensure she stayed mine.
