H is the most extreme case: It is virtually inaudible alone. To be heard, H needs the A of “hat” or the E of “adhere” or the W-E of “when” (a word that in Old English was written and pronounced as hwenne, showing more clearly the H’s function; most modern English WH- words originally were spelled HW-).
