The unity of science movement, with its six International Congresses for the Unity of Science (1935–41) and the ambitious publication project International Encyclopedia of Unified Science (1938–70), had a broader cultural meaning and goal, most notably the attempt to improve the human condition and to promote social reform and the intellectual struggle against irrationalism and totalitarian Weltanschauungen . It was a manifestation of a late- Enlightenment conception of science with a socially inspired anti- metaphysics.
