The Book Thief
Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann are characters in Markus Zusak’s novel “The Book Thief” and in “The Book Thief”, to what extent can you justify Hans and Rosa Hubermann’s dangerous actions? The Hubermanns are intensely complex characters with complex motivations and thought processes, but by reading into the novel and exploring author’s purpose you can discover character traits, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses for every character. Although Hans and Rosa face an unfortunate internal conflict, and they are only human, they act selflessly throughout the novel, endangering their foster daughter’s life and their own life multiple times, eventually with indirectly fatal consequences for Hans. Hans is a softer character, while Rosa is tough and aggressive, and this power dynamic helps them function and helps them protect those who they’ve chosen to bring into their lives and protect. Hans is the brains, doing what he can physically to help, while Rosa manages her family and tries to keep food on the table. Their actions make more sense through a moral lens than they do through a historical or practical lens, and this makes you look at the novel and the characters much differently than you would in a more conventional holocaust story. Research for this piece was done by reading into Zusak’s “The Book Thief” and studying the actions and motivations of each character independently, as well as by considering the actions and text using prior knowledge of the time period, important historical events and geography of the area in the novel

Bu andan kaçıyoruz, çünkü şimdide kalırsak korkularımızla yüzleşmek zorunda kalacağız. We run away from this moment because if we stay in the now we will have to face our fears.

"Derler ya, insan asla doymak bilmez diye, yüzünü verseniz ille de astarını ister diye. Bu sözler insanı kınama amacıyla söylenir. Oysa bu insan soyunun en büyük yeteneklerinden biri, onu elindekiyle yetinen hayvanlardan üstün kılan bir yetenektir bu." "They say that because a person can never get enough, if you show his face, he will always want his lining. These words are used to condemn people. However, this is one of the greatest talents of the human race, a talent that makes it superior to animals that are content with what they have."
"20 yaşında muhteşem, 40 yaşında çekici ve hayatınızın geri kalan kısmı boyunca karşı konulmaz olabilirsiniz. 50 yaşından sonra yüzünüzün aldığı şekli hak etmelisiniz."* "You can be gorgeous at 20, attractive at 40 and irresistible for the rest of your life. After 50, you have to earn the shape your face takes. "* Coco Chanel

We don't run, we face it ..
Most people run from what they’re afraid of. I run toward it. That doesn’t mean I think I’m bulletproof (I’ve learned the hard way that I’m not) or that I’m unaware of danger. I experience fear as much as the next man. "But one of the greatest mistakes people can make is becoming comfortable with their fears." Whatever is worrying me, I meet it head-on and engage it until the situation is resolved. My refusal to become comfortable with fear gives me an advantage in almost every situation. Korkuyla rahat olmayı reddetmem neredeyse her durumda bana avantaj sağlıyor.
