At Lepanto the Ottomans now had a secure forward base on the edge of the Ionian Sea from which to conduct naval operations. During this tense time, Leonardo da Vinci arrived in the city to offer his services as a military engineer. He came with a head full of extraordinary schemes for the city’s defence – a diving suit of pig’s leather with bamboo pipes for air tubes, sketches for submarines . Whatever conversations took place came to nothing. (Two years later he was drawing up proposals to put to Sultan Bayezit for a single-span bridge across the Golden Horn.)
In early September 1458, having bloodlessly taken possession of Athens and unpredictably spared its population out of respect for the ancient culture of Greece, Mehmet paid an impromptu ‘friendly’ visit to Negroponte with a force of a thousand cavalry. The terrified population thought that their last hour had come. They came out to greet the sultan with rich gifts. He jingled across the bridge connecting the island to mainland Greece and inspected the place. It was a warning. Such visits were never innocent; Mehmet had sat outside the walls of Constantinople for three days in 1452, appraising its defences.

Giacomo de’ Languschi'nin Fatih Sultan Mehmet'i tasviri
The sovereign, the Grand Turk Mehmet Bey, is a youth of twenty-six, well built, of large rather than medium stature, expert at arms, of aspect more frightening than venerable, laughing seldom, full of circumspection, endowed with great generosity, obstinate in pursuing his plans, bold in all undertakings, as eager for fame as Alexander of Macedonia. Daily he has Roman and other historical works read to him by a companion called Ciriaco of Ancona and another Italian … He speaks three languages, Turkish, Greek and Slavic. He is at great pains to learn the geography of Italy and to inform himself … where the seat of the pope is and that of the emperor, and how many kingdoms there are in Europe. He possesses a map of Europe with the countries and provinces. He learns of nothing with greater interest and enthusiasm than the geography of the world and military affairs; he burns with desire to dominate; he is a shrewd investigator of conditions. It is with such a man that we Christians have to deal. Today, he says, the times have changed, and declares that he will advance from east to west as in former times the westerners advanced into the Orient. There must, he says, be only one empire, one faith, and one sovereignty in the world.
The Baath Party was founded by a group of Syrians—mainly Christians and Alawites—who belonged to the country’s educated elite. The party came into being, in fact, as a reaction against the religious and social persecution that Syrian minorities suffered at the hands of the Sunni majority, and these Muslim and non-Muslim minorities were the main beneficiaries of its founding. For a considerable time after they came to power in 1963, the Baathists made a genuine attempt to rid Syria of its social distinctions and class differences, providing new work opportunities for many, without discrimination. Its original aim was the establishment of a secular Syrian state whose slogan was “religion for God and the homeland for everyone.” Young Alawites soon discovered the Baath Party as a new way of escaping their hardship and poverty and they joined in huge numbers.

Kritovoulos, the Sultan’s contemporary biographer, describes what Mehmed did: "He then showed [his cannon makers] another way of doing this by a new form of cannon. For, he said, if they were willing, it was possible to construct a different sort of gun with a slightly changed design that could fire the stone to a great height, so that when it came down it would hit the ships amidships and sink them. He said that they must first aim it and level it, getting the measures by mathematical calculation and then fire on the ships. Thus he explained his plan." These artisans responded by constructing a cannon and “leveling it by special design” so that it “shot the stone up to a great height.” The first shot fired missed, but the second shot struck a ship “in the center,” sinking it. Seeing this other vessels fighting for the Byzantines withdrew, never to return.

In the prologue of the eleborate history which he wrote at the command Bayezid II, Kemal Pashazade compares the Ottoman history with earlier Muslim dynasties and sums under three heads, vücûh-i rüchân, 'the reason of their superiority'. First, he says, the Ottomans unlike other Muslim dynasties, came the power not through the violent overthrow of older Muslim states within the Islamic community, but through the conquest of territories pertaining to the infidel world, the Dâr ul-Harb.
