"Lutheran faith thus left the spontaneous vitality of impulsive action and naïve emotion more nearly unchanged. The motive to constant self-control and thus to a deliberate regulation of one's own life, which the gloomy doctrine of Calvinism gave, was lacking".
Lotte was about to reply, when we had to separate for the figure eight, and I thought I could detect a certain reflectiveness in her features when our paths crossed again. “Why shouldn’t you know?” she said as she gave me her hand for the promenade.

We took a few turns around the ballroom to catch our breath; then she sat down. The oranges I had managed to procure for us—they were the last ones left—were most refreshing, except for the fact that I felt a stab in the region of my heart every time she graciously gave a piece to a greedy girl sitting next to her.
Stonewall gave a wave of his hand and turned his back to glare at the dark woods separating his army from the open field, where many of these men would die.
the dread of "Oh... hi, " or the quick annihilation of "Who?"
It was all new to him: the memorization of strategic speeches, the trial runs of possible conversations, the yogic deep breathing, all leading up to the blind, headlong dive into the staticky sea of telephone lines. He hadn't suffered the eternity of the ring about to be picked up, didn't know the heart rush of hearing that incomparable voice suddenly linked with his own, the sense it gave of being too close to even see her, of being actually inside her ear. He had never felt the pain of lackluster responses, the dread of "Oh... hi," or the quick annihilation of "Who?"
Heart! We will forget him! You and I - tonight! You may forget the warmth he gave - I will forget the light!

"...I want people to bow as they see me and say he is gifted with poetry, he has seen the presence of the Creator. And the Creator gave me a shot of his presence to gratify my wish, so as not to cheat me of my yearning for him. "
You Are Not My Type
For a long time,’ Nico said, ‘I had a crush on you. I just wanted you to know.’ Percy looked at Nico. Then at Annabeth, as if to check that he’d heard correctly. Then back at Nico. ‘You –’ ‘Yeah,’ Nico said. ‘You’re a great person. But I’m over that. I’m happy for you guys.’ ‘You … so you mean –’ ‘Right.’ Annabeth’s grey eyes started to sparkle. She gave Nico a sideways smile. ‘Wait,’ Percy said. ‘So you mean –’ ‘Right,’ Nico said again. ‘But it’s cool. We’re cool. I mean, I see now … you’re cute, but you’re not my type.’ ‘I’m not your type … Wait. So –’ ‘See you around, Percy,’ Nico said.
A few years back, the Chief Rabbi of the UK, Lord Sacks, gave a speech regarding what we refer to as “The Joseph Principle.” It was a sermon about social networ s and the viciousness of many posts. The premise was that Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery when he was not present to object or make his feelings about it known. The story implies that had he been there in person, they would never have been able to carry out such a heinous act. The story shows that when you are not physically with someone or not emotionally engaged with them, you might behave far worse than if they were present or if you cared about them. The same can be said for social media, where engagement is often with people you do not know. When you see a message or a post, your reaction reflects your frame of mind, not necessarily that of its originator. Not seeing the person, hearing the tone, or gauging the body language makes things even worse. And all these technologies are specifically trained to identify it and use it for their benefit, not yours.
