ROBOTIC EDUCATION SYSTEM
ROBOTIC EDUCATION SYSTEM Dead Poet Society (1989) is a very successful novel and attracted a lot of attention with its script. The novel exhibits how the students of Welton Academy, a highly disciplined, well-known and respected school known for its strict educational rules, went through the filter of change and development along with Mr. Keating, a literature teacher who had just arrived at the school. Mr. Keating is completely opposed to the school's methods, taking it as a principle to go outside of constant thoughts. By revealing the dreams of his students, he instills in them the self-confidence that they need to pursue their dreams. In the educational system in Turkey, it is actually similar to the educational system of the novel in many aspects. These aspects show the relationship between the student and the teacher, the education that takes the teacher to the center, and the education system that aims to teach only technical knowledge . In the system based on memorizing education, the teacher is the main element of education. Education, which centers the teacher in education, means ignoring the student's role in learning. In such an educational style, the teacher's words are absolute truth, and there is strict discipline. Welton Academy, featured in the novel, is a school with this understanding of education and teachers in this discipline. A strict and harsh method is applied to all students, ignoring the learning needs and differences of the students. Our education system is also based on memorization. Students simply take information and learn it, they do not question or discuss it. In this way, students become afraid of their teachers. however, the teacher should not be an element of fear. In education, the student must be in the center and the teacher must guide the student and the student's learning needs should be taken into consideration. Besides technical knowledge, it is important to acquire life skills. Students simply memorizing information imposed on them robotizes them. Instilling human values in students through life is necessary for students to live a healthy life in society as a better person. But the only thing that matters both in the novel and in our education system, is to be people who work and have jobs. It is also important that students can be sensitive to their environment and other people, have a positive state of emotion and acquire behaviors that are considered virtuous. These are skills, and these skills cannot be acquired by memorizing what is written in the book. It is necessary to take an example and experience it. It is necessary for parents to avoid repressive authority, to provide a tolerant environment for their children with a democratic attitude. Parents should not be oppressive about their children's plans and should express their opinions in a friendly environment with them. They should only assume the role of a consultant and guide to them. But unfortunately, both in our understanding of education and in the novel, families decide everything from the part where their children will be educated, as if they will study it. And even in the film, the father of one of the students interfered with his child's dreams, causing him to break away from life. As a result, unfortunately, our education system is based on the basic philosophy of Education. We were all brought up as individuals who didn't think and search the events, just memorizing knowledge which we learn. So we became individuals who were afraid of everything and could not even defend our rights because the information was always available to us, we did not receive it by our efforts, because that's how we learned. The students in the film are in a robotized system, just like us.
