I was initially going to rate it 9 stars, but after all the stereotypical and racist comments (discussed at the end) made in this book, I decided that I would give it 7 stars. I liked this book, I did. Now that I think about it, it feels like nothing has happened yet so many things happened. Park was not your average white guy with bulky abs and Eleanor was not that "pretty" girl everybody had a crush on. This is one of the many factors why it was a different book than the other ones in the same genre. Although they both tried to be invisible, Eleanor and Park always stood out in the crowd. "Jesus. Was it possible to rape somebody's hand?" The characters were so real and I loved them for that. They all went through rough times and they all managed to survive somehow. This is what I like to read in young adult books; the struggle of teenagers, their not-so-perfect lives... Give me relatable characters and sad realities which shows us how the world is not always "great" and how there aren't always happy endings to stories. I did not cry while reading this book, to be honest. Nothing can top the good cry I had while reading A Thousand Boy Kisses. I have to add that the song recommendations in this book were absolutely amazing. The Smiths, The Beatles and The Cure were frequently mentioned so I might make a book playlist soon <3 "She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn't supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something." Historical fiction books are usually amazing, I really liked this one. Imagine, it's 1986, you are lying on your waterbed and listening to your Elvis Costello records, making tapes for your friends to play it on your Walkman (my mom had one too!). Okay we get it, I love historical fictions! I also found Park's style similar to the one that I wish to acquire one day: chuck taylor converses, band t-shirts and eyeliners. Absolutely swag. "Eleanor's hair caught fire at dawn. Her eyes were dark and shining, and his arms were sure of her. The first tine he'd touched her hand, he'd known." I found this book racist. The way Rowell made Park's mom talk like an infant, how Beebi and DeNice were stereotyped, and the way Eleanor kept calling Park a "weird Asian kid" was undeniably racist. I'd like to think that Rainbow Rowell did this intentionally, to emphasise the racism towards people at that time but it was too much. I also did a little research and read that Rainbow Rowell has chosen to ignore this issue by not addressing it. I am well aware that some authors think that there has to be a lot of swearing, bullying and racism for a book to be a young adult book but no, that is wrong. It was kind of disappointing. "It was the nicest thing she could imagine. It made her want to have his babies and give him both of her kidneys." Other than that, it was nice I wish it weren't a deeply offensive book because I loved it so much. I loved Eleanor and Park, they felt so real. Please check the trigger warning before reading this book because there were many like fatphobia, pedophilia, emotional and physical abuse that were disturbing. I would've written a more detailed and less repetitive review, but I do not remember much of the book, so that is it for today. Have a nice start to February and happy reading to you all!
