Crime Monastery
"The Name of the Rose” which is a post-modern work was written by Umberto Eco in 1980. It is a historical murder mystery. Umberto Eco is a medieval expert. The author deals with the Middle Ages in a fictional structure, while at the same time providing real information about the state - church-sects, along with his deep historical research. I will write some of my impressions about the work in a few paragraphs and in some parts I will make comparisons with today. First of all, when a reader decides to read a book, rather than the content of the work, the title and cover of the work influence the reader, and then, the reader establish a connection between the name of the work and the content of the work. So, why is the title of the work called "The Name of the Rose"? Yes, the first thing the reader will think about after finishing the work will be why “The Name of the Rose”. Originally the name of the book was “Crime Monastery” but the author changed it to “Adso of Melk” because he did not want to direct the reader. But then, the writer started using the “rose” because of a line he had read somewhere. Umberto Eco said for the rose, the rose is such a symbol that it has so much meaning and also has no meaning. Therefore, the author put this name to book for the attention of the reader. In Greek mythology, the story of the rose is as follows; Aphrodite gives Eros a Rose, and Eros gives it to the Goddess of silence. His goal is to keep the depravity of all women hidden, even his mother. Thus, we realized that Umberto Eco was also inspired by mythology because we are witnessing many hidden events while reading the book. My one impression is that information is stored and so difficult to access. The monastery has the largest library in the world, but no one is allowed in it except the librarian and his assistant. Manuscript works are written by monks, reproduced, but the monk who wrote one-piece has no knowledge of other books written. In fact, this attitude towards access to books and information has been encountered in different cultures in different centuries because books and information are seen as elements of danger against power. The reason why the clergy does not want the information to be reached is that they think that the teachings of religion should be known, science should not progress, and faith should not be shaken. When I wrote these things, I thought that Protestantism also emerged in this way. Yes, when the Bible was translated into Latin, didn't the Catholics and the church ask that the Bible not be translated, that information not be accessed? When you see the difficulty William and Adson have in accessing information in the work, it's hard not to compare it to the present. How aware are we of the value of information today? How can we be sure what we know and to what extent? While it's so easy to get information today ... why? As Umberto Eco said, "young people don’t want to learn anything anymore…”. Another issue that will not be overlooked is that Adson is not pursuing his love, but pursuing knowledge. Adson says “She was only earthly love of my life. Yet I neither knew or learned her name”. Thus, the work, tells us how valuable the information is. Another impression is why seven days and seven murders? The seven great sins in Christianity have been the subject of many movies and books, as well as "The Name of the Rose". Yes, indeed, the murders in the work are committed according to seven great sins. Interreligious conflicts are an ongoing issue from the existence of human beings and religions to the present day. But at the same time, religions disagreed in themselves and had conflicts among sects, and another issue that this work deals with is the conflict of reason and faith, namely sectarian conflict. While the Franciscan sect believes that Prophet Jesus willingly opposes luxury, and all wealth must be shared with the public, Benedict sect believes that the church must hold the money or economic power. Another point where these cults differ from each other is the act of laughing. While the Franciscan cult is inclined to laugh, Benedict cult is like laughing in a demonic wind. If we compare the sects with today, it can be considered as equivalent to socialism and capitalism. Finally, it is seen in the work as the cause of lust, which is one of the seven great sins, by treating women as a very evil being. William quotes from the Bible “woman takes possession of a man’s precious so while and woman more bitter than death” and tells his thoughts following these sentences; " I find it difficult to convince myself that God would have introduced such a foul being into creation without endow her with some virtues. How peaceful life would be without love agile, how safe how tranquil… To summarize in general; Umberto Eco discusses his work "The Name of the Rose" in religion, science, philosophy, and many other topics and describes the middle ages with a postmodern narrative.
