Orientalism in "Women of Algries"
Before analysing Delacroix's The Women of Algiers in their Apartment (1834) we should touch on a subject. Orientalism. This term generally depicts how Eastern societies cultures, languages etc. are examined. This term created by Western societies like it’s used to be. Western, created this term for pursuing their policy of dominating. According to West they are the stongest in every aspects such as; culture, language or anything else we can imagine and they use East for creating this superiority. When we look at Delacroix's painting, we see the depiction of Algerian women. Here the painter depicted women with their clothes, seductively looking and expressions where they lived. In fact, it would not be correct to say 'depicted' because depictions are not correct, it also shows how east women are more uncivilized than the west. Although the descriptions are correct, the aim mostly for presenting the east inferior rather than to portray it. In this case western produces the stereotype that non-European, which means that Orient is lazy, thoughtless, sexually immoral and mad. The West already has colonialism that can dominate the east but doing this directly physically will make the west notorious so there must be a reason to fill the back and at this point Orientalism comes into play says Edward Said. There are dozens of things that can be shown as an example of showing the east as bad. One of them is their religion. One of the biggest examples of the "terrorist", "barbarian" labeling of the Middle East, which is widely Muslim. or any TV series with an eastern theme, showing that the reason why the eastern people are extremely poor is lazy and not worked on time, as if the West never exploited them in time.
