Again, a captivating romance from Mariana Zapata...
) I LOVE reading Mariana Zapata books. So this review is a little bit about Kulti, and a little bit about Mariana Zapata books in general. Thats's probably because I love a sloooow slow burn and Zapata books I've read so far (From Lukov with Love, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and now this one, Kulti. (Anlık olarak bir tane daha kitabını okumuş bulunuyorum ancak bu inceleme yedi ay öncesine dayanıyor, o yüzden bu haliyle bırakacağım)) always have the perfect one. When reading a romance, I'm mostly interested in the forming-a-relationship part because I think the actual exciting part is that increasing but undetermined tension between them. I'm a little new to this romance world -I still mostly prefer horrors and actions but romance is more relaxing on busy times, which I'm in a lot recently- but I've read various romcoms from different authors that I probably did not mention on my profile and Zapata has the best structre for my liking -actually her books are the only ones I've come across with this structre among romcoms so far. For the relationship, I don't like that "all is lost" part after the climax in the middle -which mostly involves instinctive sex and then the confusion and hearthbreaks afterwards. I just don't like all that drama. Like in Zapata books, I like up and downs regarding the relationship but also the communicaton. Communication, guys! Like in this book, I like characters discussing their problems instead of making big -I mean BIG- mistakes or hiding BIG secrets. I liked how Sal and Rey was able to admit they are wrong at times and to express their feelings on a saddening situation. In real life, trust is really important for me so I can't find it realistic when a character forgives the other after a great gesture and move on even the mistake/secret was enormous. So Zapata's recipe is a great slowburn for me: characters actually spending time with each other before forming any kind of relationship and then this thing evolving something more lovely than friendly. And again, communication. Although I also like a good sexual tension, I don't like it as much when it's more dominant than everything else. This was the good part of the book. And then there are some things that didn't really convinced me about the story. The part about the side characters were superficial. There were Sal's friends but they were like just put in there to make her not-alone. Sal had lots of times to form a relationship with Rey but there was not a single moment outside the field with her "best friends" Jenny and Harlow. Also the name Eric, her brother, constantly popped up through the story but there wasn't even a phone call with him even though they were descripted as so close. Same with her mother; I get that she is close with her dad the most but the other side characters and side relationships other than theirs were just... superficial. They were like figurants. Overall, this was a good book with its romance but comparing the other Zapata books I've read, this is my least favorite. Nevertheless, this one was also a captivating read -I've read it in only one day instead of studying for my Physics midterm... "You'll have a team with me wherever we are, with whatever we are playing."
