Ateizm hiç de göründüğü kadar kolay değil. Bireysel seviyede basit olabilir fakat toplumların bu mevkiye ulaşmasının son derece çetin olduğu ortada. Doğrusu, modernite; Kadir-i Mutlak'ın başarısız vekillerinin molozlarıyla darmadağın denilebilir, Akıl'dan Geist (tümel ruh/kitlelerin ruhu), sanat, bilim, kültür, insanlık ve tabiata, toplum, ulus, cemiyet, devlet ve Tom Cruise'a kadar. Tanrı reddedilir reddedilmez, arka kapıdan gizlice sokulmakta, zaman zaman tanınmasını zorlaştıran sahte kılıklarla. Elbette bu fenomenlerin ilahî olanın dublörleri olduğunu iddia etmiyorum, fakat tümü kariyerleri boyunca, muhtelif zamanlarda böylesi bir işlevi yerine getirdi. Din, geleneksel olarak, politik rejimlerin meşrulaştırılmasında öylesine hayati bir rol oynadı ki, yöneticilerimizin Tanrı'nın kaybolması karşısında mutedil olmaları çok zor, ki bu da zaten O'nun yerini doldurmaya yönelik başarısız olmaya mahkum çeşitli girişimlerin sebeplerinden biri.
