Training and use of a vocabulary specific to the cult have two principal functions. The first, once more, is to cut the subject off from his natural environment and to immerse him within a community that has its own language. The second is the progressive distortion of the meaning of words which, through progressive stages, redirect the subject’s thinking and speaking patterns.
English is the elected language of work and exchange. Implemented in non-English-speaking populations, this rule tends to make them lose their identity even more. As for the English-speaking populations, they are made to learn new words (for example, wog means “non-Scientologist”), sometimes derived from slang. This supposed initiatory language serves an additional function for the initiates: it enables them to recognize themselves and other Scientologists safely when separated from the cult. Lastly, the development of the “parallel language” goes
hand in hand with ascension in the group. The higher the station, the more complicated and elaborate the language.
" There is a propaganda technique that was used for a long time by the Socialists, the Communists and the Nazis that is of interest for public relations specialists. This methods circulate in spy rings and are used fairly regularly. Here, the trick is that words are redefined in order to mean something different, something that supports the propaganda being spread. It is not a question of the natural evolution of a language. These are changes made for the sole purpose of supporting the propaganda, carefully conceived and with campaigns that are designed to sit well with public opinion. When one repeats a new definition often enough, opinions can be amended by shifting the significance of the word. The technique can be either good or bad, depending on the objectives of the propagandist.
“Psychiatry” and “psychiatrist” can be easily redefined to mean “antisocial enemy of the public.” Words can be redefined by associating various emotions and symbols to a target word. Scientologists thus redefine “doctor,” “psychiatry” and "psychology” so that they mean “undesirable antisocial elements.” Redefining a word should be done so that the new definition is repeated as often as possible. This, in regard to the words to be redefined, means battling public opinion to make your definitions credible and not those of the opposition. A coherent and repeated effort is the key to success with this propaganda technique. [6] "
