“We’re all taught from a young age that there are only two choices: pink or blue, Bratz or Power Rangers, cheerleading or football. We see gender in two dimensions because that’s what society has taught us from birth. But, are you ready for a shocking revelation? SOCIETY NEEDS TO CHANGE.” Yeah, this is a solid argument that the character defends throughout the book but at the same time they are trying to avoid dressing in a certain way. In a way that wouldn't show they are a girl or a boy which was weird when I thought about it. I get that s/he feels different everyday but dressing according to how they feel shouldn't be that hard. I felt like this was overly dramatized a little bit. “People do judge books by their covers; it’s human nature. They react to the way you look before they hear a single word that comes out of your mouth.” And everyone, including our character, does and did this. So, I don't get her/him being sad or angry about people judging her/his appearance. “The first thing you're going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?” Actually yes. Majority of our society is made up of average people, so when you first meet someone and you don't qualify to their expectations, they will wonder what the frick is going on. This is normal. You look different, people can't tell what they can tell in other people. I would wonder your gender too, this doesn't make me rude or a bully. To be honest, I haven't even heard about gender fluidity before this book and I think it is funny how the character ignores many centuries old acknowledgment of genders and all of a sudden wants to change the world. This does not mean I support the bullying or I support what she has been through. But most of us, on a daily basis try to fit in, even though we don't want to do certain things, we do them to get our place in this world. What I am saying is, people staring or people wondering about other people's gender or appearance is a perfectly normal and daily activity anyone can perform. “Look. I don't expect you to spill your guts to me. Your business is your business. Dress how you want to dress. Let people wonder. Fuck 'em." I smile. Solo raised a finger. "But you've got to stop looking for a fight every time someone makes a comment. High school sucks for everyone." I feel my smile fade, and I sit back in the chair. "It kind of feels like you're defending those guys." Solo shrugs. "There will always be guys like Jim Vickers. But I'm not going to let them stop me from doing what I want. And neither should you.” These are my feelings about it put in correct words nicely and kindly. Mostly this was a handbook, not much of a plot but enlightening.
