Oceans of information within a book
When I read the sentence "One paper published by a Duke University researcher in 2006 found that more than 40 percent of the actions people performed each day weren't actual actions, but habits. " I begin to understand the power of habit. As the book continued to bombard me with those fascinating lots of information my apprehension about habits deepened. I have some kind of habits that I want so hard to change (As a human being, we all have the undesirable habits.) At first I thought it was all the will power that it takes to change a habit. I tried, and for a while it worked. After some critical temptations, I failed again and again. I understood, there must be another way. Just the lack of willpower can't be reason for my failure. And indeed, thanks to this book, I realized it takes such a complicated mechanism to change a habit or create a new one. This book says a habit has three stages: Cue, Routine, Reward. When I see Cue, I will do Routine in order to get a Reward. This is the formula of habit loop. Understanding the mechanism of habit is not enough to change it. As the researchers say, it is nearly impossible to eradicate a habit. Rather, all you have to do is changing the routine stage. To do that : identify the routine, experiment with rewards, isolate the cue, have a plan. Also keep in mind, experiments have shown that almost all habitual cues fit into one of five categories: Location, time, emotional state, other people, immediately preceding action. Besides, neurology of habits and its impressive stories caught me off guard. Story of Eugene Pauly who lost his memory but still kept his habits and still make new habits was priceless to a med student. Starbucks' customer hunt story was read-worthy as well. But what made me wide-eyed was the companies' prediction and manipulation of customers habits. I was shocked to see how much information we give to companies without knowing a little bit about that. And it must astonishing how companies know almost everything about customers' lives. All in all, this is not just a book but one with oceans of information.
