He flinched when the creature nuzzled his scuffed boots.
She laughed, finally drawing his attention. “I think it likes you.”
“I don’t know why.” Jacks scowled at the beast.
It responded by affectionately licking the buckle at his ankle.
Evangeline continued to smile. “You should name it.”
“If I do that, it will think it’s a pet.” Jacks’s words dripped with disgust, which only further convinced Evangeline this fox might be the best thing that had ever happened to this Fate.
“How about I name her for you? What do you think of Princess
of the Fluffikins?”
“Don’t ever say that again.”
"There's someone in the North that I'm avoiding," inserted the princess.
"Tella," the empress scolded.
"What? It's the truth." The princess turned back to Evangeline. "I love balls and parties that have a high probability of ending dramatically. But I could cause an international incident-possibly a war- if I attend this celebration."

"I shall," Rhaenys replied, "but we will come again, Princess, and the next time we shall come with fire and blood."
“I don’t want some fi’len princess. I want you, Opal. I’ve wanted you since the first time I saw you. I don’t care about anything else. I’ll teach you everything you need to know. I want to marry you, I want to rule with you, I want to have children with you.”
She looks at me, tears in her eyes. “Who knows if we can even have kids together, Ke’ain!”
Opal forces out an awkward chortle.
“So, we’ll adopt. I don’t give a shit. I want you. You’re my mate.”
“Damn princess,” I say softly. “Is that really you?”
She looks at me for only a second, but it feels like she looks through me, and something about the cold, poisonous expression in her eyes breaks my heart like nothing else.
