Bizler aynı anda hem bireyleriz hem de sosyal hayvanlarız. İnsan, kısmen sosyal kısmen de bireysel bir varlık değildir; tam tersine, varoluşunu temel bir birim şekillendirir ve bunu ancak ve sadece mantıksal olarak birbirinin zıddı iki belirleyenin sentezi ya da çakışması aracılığıyla açıklayabilirsiniz: İnsan hem sosyal bağdır hem de kendi başına varlıktır, hem toplumun ürünüdür hem de otonom çekirdeğe sahip bir yaşamdır.
