The length of the shadow at Alexandria and a theorem in Elements about a line that crosses two parallel lines were enough to enable Eratosthenes to calculate the portion of the earth's circumference represented by the arc along the earth from Syene to Alexandria. He found that it represents one fiftieth of the earth's circumference.
Employing perhaps the first ever graduate research assistant, Eratosthenes hired a nameless fellow to walk between the two cities, measuring their distance. He dutifully reported back that it came to about 500 miles. Multiplying that by 50, Eratosthenes determined the circumference of the earth to be about 25,000 miles, correct to within 4 percent.
