Living with Industrial Capitalism
By the twentieth century a conventional view of work was established was very different from a hundred years before: it was waged; it took place outside the home; and it was performed predominantly by men. The household lost much of the role, which it enjoyed in premodern times, as a key arena of economic activity. This development contributed to the marginalisation of women from production.
