Fourth principle.
Heterotopias are most often linked to slices in time—which is to say that they open onto what might be termed, for the sake of symmetry, heterochronies. The heterotopia begins to function at full capacity when men arrive at a sort of absolute break with their traditional time. This situation shows us that the cemetery is indeed a highly heterotopic place since, for the individual,the cemetery begins with this strange heterochrony, the loss of life, and with this quasi-eternity in which her permanent lot is dissolution and disappearance.

Bu hoş ve özgürlüğü yücelten cümlelerin altına elli altı kişi imza atmıştı. Bunların üçte biri köle sahibiydi. Hatta bu metni kaleme alan Thomas Jefferson'ın bile yüzlerce kölesi vardı. İlk ABD başkanı olacak George Washington ve James Madison'ın da köleleri vardı. Bu bildirge imzalandığında ABD’de yarım milyon köle mevcuttu, yoğun olarak yaşadıkları Güney'de nüfusun % 40’ını oluşturuyorlardı.
Amerika kıtasındaki köle sayısı 1700'de 330.000, 1800'de 3 milyon ve 1850'lerde de 6 milyona ulaşmıştı. 1750'lerde dünyada en fazla köleye sahip devlet, 870.000 köle ile İngiltere'ydi. İlginç, aynı tarihlerde liberalizmin anavatanı da orasıydı.
