If one assumes a basic unity that is co-existing with the world of plurality, then everything in the world is obscure, confusing, contradictory, mysterious. If one assumes, however, a basic unity that existed before the world, that split itself into a world of multiplicity, and that only the latter still exists, then the hardest philosophical problems solve themselves with a playful lightness, as I have shown. The disintegration of the original unity, which we cannot cognize, into multiplicity, was the first movement. All other movements are merely necessary consequences of this first movement. Destiny is no mystery anymore and one can arrive at a clear conception of the common root of necessity and contingency, which Schopenhauer, who always mixed the transcendent with the immanent, had to deny.
On the one hand, our vision has always been of creating a world of perpetual vitality, despite our grudging recognition of death's 'necessity.' If, as I believe, the ends of men are many, and not all of them are in principle compatible with each other, then the possibility of conflict - and of tragedy - can never wholly be eliminated from human life, either personal or social. The necessity of choosing between absolute claims is then an inescapable characteristic of the human condition. This gives its value to freedom as Acton conceived of it - as an end in itself, and not as a temporary need, arising out of our confused notions and irrational and disordered lives, a predicament which a panacea could one day put right.
Once man-made, historical processes have become automatic, they are no less ruinous than the natural life process that drives our organism and which in its own terms, that is, biologically, leads from being to non-being, from birth to death. The historical sciences know only too well such cases of petrified and hopelessly declining civilizations where doom seems foreordained, like a biological necessity, and since such historical processes of stagnation can last and creep on for centuries, they even occupy by far the largest space in recorded history; the periods of being free have always been relatively short in the history of mankind.
