"Remember then: there is only one time that is important--Now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power. The most necessary man is he with whom you are, for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with any one else: and the most important affair is, to do him good, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!"

The shorter one pushes in front of the taller one. "Is Atlas here?" I don't want to tell them no, because then they'll know I'm here alone. I don't necessarily hold much trust in the male population this week.

Because no matter how many good moments she might share with Ryle throughout her lifetime, I know from experience that it would only be the worst ones that stuck with her.

"No, but don't you need to have kids?" "I don't if I don't want to. It's my decision and none of anyone else's business." "But wouldn't being with a guy hurt your position? I know how much you love the thrill of that life, so I'd hate to see you lose it." "I won't. Jeremy, Vaughn, and I will rule over that empire. The two of them are the most important heirs to the Bratva and they don't give a fuck about my sexuality, so neither will anyone who wants to keep his head in place." "Vaughn?" "The Pakhan's son. You might have seen him at the initiation. He wore the white mask."
Spoiler!
By living our lives, we nurture death. True as this might be, it was only one of the truths we had to learn. What I learned from Naoko's death was this: no truth can cure the sadness we feel from losing a loved one. No truth, no sincerity, no strength, no kindness, can cure that sorrow. All we can do is see that sadness through to the end and learn something from it, but what we learn will be no help in facing the next sadness that comes to us without warning. Hearing the waves at night, listening to the sound of the wind, day after day I focused on these thoughts of mine. Knapsack on my back, sand in my hair, I moved farther and farther west, surviving on a diet of whisky, bread and water.
