The Muslims are credited with having organized and set up hospitals in all the major towns of Islam not only for the care and treatment of patients suffering from physical ailments, but also of insane and aged persons. The first psychiatric hospitals and asylums for mental cases werebuilt by them in Baghdad as early as 705 A.D. They were soon introduced to Fes (Morocco) and Cairo (Egypt) in the eighth century. Later, famous psychiatric hospitals were built in Damascus and Aleppo in Syria also.

Ibn Sina made full use of his deep knowledge of human psychology in curing patients. Once, a young woman suffering from paralysis of the arms was brought to him for treatment. When he came to know that she did not respond positively to the earlier treatment given to her, he applied a psychological device and asked her to stand in the presence of the people assembled about him. He suddenly removed her evil and caused her to blush deeply. Then he proceeded further and raised her clothes over her head. The young lady instinctively lifted her arms to pull down her garments and was cured.

Death is our only remedy. We imagine heaven. There is no suffering there, we say. There is no sex there, we say. We mean, there is no culture there. We mean, there is no gender there. We dream that death will release us from suffering—from guilt, sex, the body. We recognize the body as the source of our suffering. We dream of a death which will mean freedom from it because here on earth, in our bodies, we are fragmented, anguished—either men or women, bound by the very fact of a particularized body to a role which is annihilating, totalitarian, which forbids us any real self-becoming or self-realization.
At that time the world seemed to me the work of a suffering and tortured god.

I think I could stand anything, any suffering, only to be able to say and to repeat to myself every moment, 'I exist.' In thousands of agonies -- I exist. I'm tormented on the rack -- but I exist! Though I sit alone in a pillar -- I exist! I see the sun, and if I don't see the sun, I know it's there. And there's a whole life in that, in knowing that the sun is there.

One only knew autumn when the cold rain came; parasol trees dying of old age; the suffering of the cold under a thin blanket; wasting your lifetimes away… all belated regrets in the end, regrets that we hadn’t met sooner.
"Before you die of love, Maya, you might want to find out if this young man is suffering as acutely from the same malady, or if he's planning to carry on his journey and leave you in the lurch," he advised me. "Aşktan ölmeden önce Maya, bu genç adamın da aynı hastalıktan mı muzdarip olduğunu yoksa yolculuğuna devam edip seni yarı yolda bırakmayı mı planladığını öğrenmek isteyebilirsin" diye tavsiyede bulundu.

"People want to escape terrible suffering, and they believe — sometimes validly — that dying may offer relief."
"The gift was his, not mine. Manuel changed me, gave me another perspective on the world. He didn't tell me what had happened to him when he was in prison - he never talks about that - but I felt his suffering in my own skin..." "Bu hediye onundu, benim değil. Manuel beni değiştirdi, dünyaya başka bir bakış açısı kazandırdı. Hapishanedeyken başına ne geldiğini bana anlatmadı - bundan hiç bahsetmiyor - ama onun acısını kendi tenimde hissettim..."

We can talk about love and write a thousand books about it, but love will be completely different for each of us because we have to experience love. Love is not about concepts; love is about action. Love in action can only produce happiness. Fear in action can only produce suffering.
