Politicians are a bit like musicians, and the instrument they play on is the human emotional and biochemical system. They give a speech – and there is a wave of fear in the country. They tweet – and there is an explosion of hatred. I don’t think we should give these musicians a more sophisticated instrument to play on.
Winston Churchill famously said that democracy is the worst political system in the world, except for all the others.
Much of the book discusses the shortcomings of the liberal world view and of the democratic system. I do so not because I believe liberal democracy is uniquely problematic, but rather because I think it is the most successful and most versatile political model humans have so far developed for dealing with the challenges of the modern world.
Ironically, the attempts of Turkey’s secularist system to undermine him, in the end, helped him.
Any system created by the mind of man can be hacked by the mind of man.
