When listing his sources for the Book of the Icelanders, Ari the Learned singled out an old woman named Thurid, who lived to be eighty seven, for being both truthful and wise. Along with stories about kings and feuds, love affairs and lawsuits, old women like Thurid told stories about hills and islands.
