“Someday we shall look back on this dark era of agriculture and shake our heads: How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?”
~The first biotech crop went to market in 1994. Today, 167 million acres worldwide are planted with genetically modified crops, chiefly corn, cotton, soybeans, and canola, engineered to produce their own insecticides or withstand treatment by herbicides.
~İlk biyoteknoloji mahsulü 1994 yılında piyasaya çıktı. Bugün dünya çapında 167 milyon dönümlük alanda, kendi böcek ilaçlarını üretmek veya herbisitlerin tedavisine dayanmak üzere tasarlanmış, genetiği değiştirilmiş mahsuller, başlıca mısır, pamuk, soya fasulyesi ve kanola ekiliyor.
~Some of the multinational corporations that are taking over the farmland of North America are also buying up seed companies and literally attempting to patent the world’s seeds. This is not science fiction. It’s happening now. In January of 2005, Monsanto (now dubbed “Lord of the Seeds”) took over Seminis, the world’s leading seed company. At this rate, a few multinational corporations are close to gaining control of the world’s seed supply.
~Kuzey Amerika'nın tarım arazilerini ele geçiren çok uluslu şirketlerden bazıları da tohum şirketlerini satın alıyor ve kelimenin tam anlamıyla dünyanın tohumlarını patentlemeye çalışıyor. Bu bilim kurgu değil. Şimdi gerçekleşiyor. 2005 yılının Ocak ayında, Monsanto (artık "Tohumların Efendisi" olarak anılmaktadır) dünyanın önde gelen tohum şirketi Seminis'i devraldı. Bu hızda, birkaç çokuluslu şirket dünyanın tohum arzının kontrolünü ele geçirmeye çok yakın.
