Contains spoilers. So, you have to have a philosophical and psychological interest in what makes people become evil, to be interested in this book. Even if you are a Hunger Games fan, if you are the type of person who likes to see the world in black and white, who feels safer ignoring all the shades of gray, and as Lucy Gray has said in the book "People aren't so bad, really. It's what the world does to them. Like us, in the arena. We did things in there we'd never have considered if they just left us alone." then this book isn't for you. But if you are the kind of person who enjoys reading about what made Nazi soldiers cruel, or realize that all the evil dictators of history thought they were doing the right thing, then for sure this book is for you! I've finished 8 books while reading this one, as the first half or so was extremely predictable. But it's still quite exciting considering the fact that it gives us more information about the war that was brought upon the Capital by District 13. And we have always looked at it from the side of the district, but never wondered how it would be if we were a child in the Capital during those days? Snow surely has the characteristics of a future dictator; egoistic, hungry for power and status, ambitious and proud. He cares too much about power, money, and status. But it's not hard to imagine anyone attached to these things the same way, after having all of them stripped away by rebels who brought only death and hunger to them. Snow has seen people eating people, he witnessed what people turned into once there was no order. Pure chaos. And he hated it. It took his parent from him, his status, and wealth. And so, he was capable of anything to have them back, to claim them back. As they were his identity, the Snow heritage. Snow lands on top. For some people, it's hard to accept the fact that bad people don't always do bad things. They are still human, with friends and emotions. Even nazi soldiers did some nice stuff sometimes, maybe even some of them were nice people before. Crazy, right? It took me a long time to realize that people aren't born evil, but we have the capacity to do very evil things. And the main message of this book is exactly this. It makes you question if, under the same conditions, you would do things differently. Of course, nobody can ever know. Because we can only think as who we are right now, not who we would be under different circumstances. [ Snow is the mentor of the District 12 girl, Lucy Gray. She is a singer and a very clever girl. They fall in love before the games, but they are also using each other, as Snow is the ticket to Lucy Gray's survival and she is the only ticket to university for Snow. He needs the scholarship that the winner gets to afford university. After a lot of interesting events and cheating, Lucy Gray and Snow win the games. Reference to snakes and birds are very often in the book, even snakes and birds themselves are central to the story. There is the crazy game maker, who alters animals and put snakes on the arena to punish them. She believes without a doubt that humans are wild animals that had to be controlled, and without control, there would only be chaos. And she is quite influential over Snow's ideas about human nature. And there is Dean Highbottom, who dispises Snow. And later on, we figure out that it was because of his father who took the idea of the Hunger Games that Highbottom had when he was drunk and submitted it without asking him. And he has to live with the whole Capitol crediting him for the Hunger Games. Well, not for much longer anyway. In the beginning, we see that Snow wants to be seen more like his mother, and wants to believe that himself. But after realizing what his father had done just for a good grade and that he had cheated for the same thing, he ends up realizing that he is like his father after all. And of course, Sejanus. The boy who came from District 2 and ended up being one of the richest students of the Academy, but never managed to fit in as he was always a district 2 boy inside. He always tries to do the right thing, but he is not very smart so multiple times Snow saves him. But in the end, Snow reports his plans to run with some rebels and causes his death. Actually, it's very hard for him to decide what to do with the recording, and he even regrets sending it but soothes himself by thinking nobody will listen to it. So it's not like he's pure evil, he has regrets, good intentions and he even cries multiple times in the books. And, Lucy Gray's songs! I admit I skipped fast some of them, but the ones who were familiar, like "Hanging Tree" or the one about Snow, I really liked. We got to see the origins of the song, and the origins of some things we were used to in the Hunger Games, like sponsors. ] So overall, it was a good book. Especially in the last %30 of it, quite a lot of unexpected things happened. And the book overall is thought-provoking on human nature. (less)
