Even when the lion's not there.
First, when the pirates demanded a ransom of twenty talents, Caesar burst out laughing. They did not know, he said, who it was that they had captured, and he volunteered to pay fifty.
Then there was Marcus Appius who opened his speech in a lawsuit by saying that his friend had begged him to show care, eloquence and integrity. ‘And how can you be so hard-hearted,’ said Cicero, ‘as not to exhibit a single one of those qualities which your friend demanded of you?’
These people objected to his jurisdiction and authority, claiming that it was contrary to an ancient law established by the Romans. To this Pompey replied: ‘Stop quoting the laws to us. We carry swords.’
They say that once Publius Silo, the most powerful of the enemy commanders and the one with the greatest reputation, said to him: ‘If you really are a great general, Marius, come down and fight it out.’ To which Marius replied: ‘If you are a great general, make me fight against my will.’
Apollonius had shown no particular excitement while he was listening, and now that Cicero had stopped speaking he sat for a long time lost in thought. Cicero was distressed at this, but finally Apollonius said: ‘Certainly, Cicero, I congratulate you and I am amazed at you. It is Greece and her fate that I am sorry for. The only glories that were left to us were our culture and our eloquence. Now I see that these too are going to be taken over in your person by Rome.‘
‘What's the name of the lecherous imperator? What's the name of the man who is trying to find a man? Who is it who scratches his head with one finger?’ After each question he would make a sign by shaking the folds of his toga, and the mob, like a trained chorus, would all roar out the answer: ‘Pompey.’
The very animals, he said, who lived in Africa ought to have some experience of Roman strength and Roman daring; and so he devoted a few days to the hunting of lions and elephants.
The feasting lasted for many days and in the middle of it Metella fell mortally ill. The priests forbade Sulla to go near her or to have his house polluted by her funeral, and so he sent her a letter of divorce and ordered her to be carried to another house while she was still alive.
It is said that one of Caesar's centurions, who had been sent by him to Rome, was standing outside the senate house and, when he was told that the senate would not give Caesar an extension of his command, he clapped his hand on the hilt of his sword and said: ‘This will give it to him all right.’
