1966'da İngiltere'nin Brighton kentinde doğan Philip Reeve, uzun yıllar bir kitapçıda çalıştı ve amatör olarak sinemayla ilgilendi. Çeşitli dergilerde öyküleri yayımlanırken, 1994'ten bu yana 40'ı aşkın kitap resimledi. Özellikle, Murderous Maths (Öldürücü Matematik), Horrible Histories (Dehşetengiz Tarih), Dead Famous (Ölü Ünlüler) ve Urgum the Axeman (Baltalı Urgum) gibi çocuk kitaplarına yaptığı desenlerle tanınan Reeve, 2001'de yazdığı ilk romanı Yürüyen Kentler'le (Mortal Engines) 2002 Gold Nestlé Smarties ve 2003 Blue Peter Yılın Kitabı ödüllerini aldı. Ardından, devam niteliğindeki ikinci kitabı İhanet Altını (Predator's Gold), bu kez Amerikan Kütüphaneler Birliği'nin (ALA) 2005 "En İyi Kitap" ödülünü kazandı. Serinin üçüncü kitabı Infernal Devices'ı (Cehennem Makineleri) A Darkling Plane (Karanlık Düzlük) izledi. Eşi ve oğluyla birlikte Dartmoor'da yaşayan Reeve, çocuklar için Buster Bayliss dizisinden sonra fantastik dizi Larklight 'ı ve Kral Arthur'un öyküsünü anlattığı Here Lies Arthur (Arthur Burada Yatıyor) kitabını kaleme aldı.
