It’s not the money itself that matters, it’s the symbolic value. It’s recognition for those of us behind the scenes; it’s a light shone on those unseen beings who make the world a better place. We cannot live in the country of the Revolution yet ignore the labour of the little people.

If the world is adrift, if humanity is old and disenchanted, if the apocalypse is around the corner, if beauty and poetry are the only possible forms of resistance (as our writer has proclaimed in her novels), then we are not simply her literary advisors and protective totems. We are the bulwark. We are the shield. Yes, we are – in all modesty – decorative, protective deities watching over her rigid little aesthetic world, and we make it possible for her to produce writing where there is always some reference to sublime calligraphy.
