ames Robert Brown FRSC Kanadalı bir bilim filozofudur. Toronto Üniversitesi'nde felsefe profesörüdür. Matematik felsefesinde matematiksel Platonizmi, görsel akıl yürütmeyi savundu ve bilim felsefesinde bilimsel gerçekçiliği çoğunlukla sosyal yapılandırmacılıkla ilişkili gerçekçi olmayan görüşlere karşı savundu.

The unity of science movement, with its six International Congresses for the Unity of Science (1935–41) and the ambitious publication project International Encyclopedia of Unified Science (1938–70), had a broader cultural meaning and goal, most notably the attempt to improve the human condition and to promote social reform and the intellectual struggle against irrationalism and totalitarian Weltanschauungen . It was a manifestation of a late- Enlightenment conception of science with a socially inspired anti- metaphysics. Between the two world wars meta-physics was seen as a correlative feature of German idealism as well as of (Austro- )Fascist ‘universalism’, as represented by the economist Othmar Spann.

Philosophy is not a science, even though it pervades all sciences. Because while these latter consist of systems of true assertions and contains knowledge, philosophy consists in the search for the meaning of the statements and creates understanding, which leads to wisdom.
For example, Johannes Kepler inferred that the conception of an ellipse was the proper one to use in colligating the observed positions of the orbit of Mars; he thus discovered the law that ‘the orbit of Mars is elliptical’ and generalized it to ‘all orbital paths are elliptical’ (known now as Kepler’s first law). Kepler used the observations that had been made earlier by Tycho Brahe, yet neither Tycho nor anyone else had realized that the observations could be brought together using the conception of an ellipse. It was not an accident that Kepler was able to see this: his knowledge of mathematics, and especially geometry, was superb.
