Every long-term rich patient meant a steady flow of income for doctors, many of whom could not hope for employment outside of the sanatoria towns because they suffered from tuberculosis themselves. The Berghof sanatorium’s head doctor, Hofrat Behrens—with his bloodshot, watery eyes and bluish cheeks—also seems sickly; indeed, he is suspected to be ‘einer der Ärzte, die Leidensgenossen derjenigen sind, deren Aufenthalt sie überwachen’ (‘one of those physicians who not only supervises people’s stay here, but also shares their sufferings’) (p. 202/p.156). Mann’s novel captured the mercantile aspect of sanatorium life with ruthless precision. Doctors felt attacked; in the 1920s their income was stalling even without the added negative publicity. As Vera Pohland explains in her study of literary sanatoria, the serious reputation of Davos as a high-altitude health resort was changing around 1920 because of the simultaneous development of the town into a winter sports centre. No wonder doctors wished Mann’s novel away and sought to discredit its author.
I couldn’t seem to peel my eyes away from the dirty ball of flesh in front of me. I tightened my grip on her hair. What would my new pet look like after it had been given a bath? Curiosity slithered into my mind like a snake. A little fun before I killed her wouldn’t hurt me.

aerea gittin de ne oldu gebercen
In the Red Keep, Aerea had loved her horse, her hounds, and her friends. On Dragonstone, the dragons became her friends … her only friends, aside from Elissa Farman … and she began to count the days until she could mount one and fly far, far away.
“Your touch.” His voice, deep and grainy from sleep, startled her. She pulled her hand back but he snatched it with lightning-quick reflexes, placing it on the scar again. “My touch?” “I didn't realize how much I missed your touch. You gave a man starved a feast every day until he forgot what hunger felt like, and then took it away.”
She didn’t go back with him that night. But he stayed the night. He stayed the night, just holding her, letting her cry, letting her hit him, but not letting her away from him.
Yueh turned away to hide his face from her. If only it were possible to hate these people instead of love them!

“Why are you blushing?” He took my face in his hands, which made my blush far worse, considering I couldn’t look away from him. “I thought I’d fucked all the shame out of you already?” He kissed my forehead, and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. “Apparently I need to corrupt you a bit more, baby girl.”

Amara, 18 years
Keeping her face to the ground, Amara walked away from the clearing without a word, wondering if there would ever be an end to the pain, realizing that there wasn't much difference between true evil and true love. They snuck up on the vulnerable, gripped them by the throat, and left a realm of ruin behind.
“Why did you protect me, Leon?” He looked appalled at my question. He shook his head, but I insisted. “Why are you protecting me? Why? What makes me any different than the last girl?” He was really scowling now; his hands were working inside his jacket, as if he was clenching and unclenching his fists. His jaw, too, was tensing. But I let the question hang. I wanted an answer. There was a hell of a lot going on that I didn’t understand, but him? Us? Whatever the hell that meant? I wanted to know. “I decided I wanted you,” he said simply, but the words barely made their way out from between his teeth. “I saw you, and...and I felt…” He winced, as if the word stung. Felt. What did a demon feel? “Not anger. Not hatred or fury. You…” He turned his face away, staring back into the trees. “You’re a light in the dark, and I’ve been in the dark a very long time.”

“He only knew that at each attempt to make her share his life, his thoughts, his sense of beauty, she shied away from him like a frightened horse.”

Being alone with her is like opening a door away from normal life and then closing it behind him.
“Sorry, the last time you hugged my wife, it lasted five seconds. That should last you for the next five years.” Cole gaped at him, before turning his attention to me. “I swear our Mama didn’t raise him like this.” I grinned. “I happen to like him exactly as he is.” Walker blew me a kiss and I reached out and pretended to catch it. Cole made a gagging noise like he was about to throw up. “You guys are so sweet it makes me sick.” Walker smiled unrepentantly and skated away. “Keep everyone away from my wife, Elaine,” he reminded her, and I swear her muscles hulked out even more as she stood there.
