from Anne Sexton's "Self in 1958"
(showed examples of dehumanization and lack of individuality, and the corruption of society at the time.) Someone plays with me, (here, someone refers patriarchal system) plants me in the all-electric kitchen, Is this what Mrs. Rombauer said? Someone pretends with me— (she lives what they expected from her) I am walled in solid by their noise— or puts me upon their straight bed. They think I am me! (she is questioning herself because she is not actually her. she is living their expectations.) Their warmth? Their warmth is not a friend! (they are not sincere) They pry my mouth for their cups of gin and their stale bread. What is reality (again she is questioning the reality) to this synthetic doll who should smile, who should shift gears, (she has to pretend that she is happy no matter what) should spring the doors open in a wholesome disorder, and have no evidence of ruin or fears? (society never feared to ruin that womens life. everything was perfect from their sides.) But I would cry, rooted into the wall that was once my mother, if I could remember how and if I had the tears. (you have to think yourself as an individual because no one cares you except you.)
