Trade, War and Ceremony
Venetians began to shape their own history in 1177 when they hosted and reconciled the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. This political landmark was celebrated in the annual ‘Wedding with the Sea’ ceremony on Ascension Day, the Doge being rowed out of the lagoon on the ceremonial state galley, to cast a golden ring into the sea. Behind the ceremony lay a classic Venetian power play.
