"Imagine a person who, blessed with good health, excellent reflexes, and a fine intellect, rates 90 points on the ability scale. Now suppose that talented person fails to put in any real effort because she has too much confidence in her own intelligence, athleticism, and health, resulting in an effort rating of just 30 points. Multiplying these two factors together, we get 90x30, or only 2,700 points. Contrast this with the person who's just slightly above average points on the ability scale. Suppose further that this person believes he must work that much harder in order to make up for his lack of outstanding ability, with an effort rating of 90 that reflects his strenuous degree of exertion. Such a person would have 60x90, or 5,400 points, twice that of the talented person in our first example. As the final step, then, we would multiply these totals by the attitude factor, which ranges from negative 100 to positive 100."
