Beyond merit
I paid attention to who was made redundant and who wasn't, and for some people it seemed to be nothing to do with how good they were at their job. It seemed to depend more on their relationships to senior directors, and other office politics. I realised that certain advantages were at play here, beyond how hard somebody worked or how good they were at their jobs.
