“Beautiful World, Where Are You” tells the story of four young people who are in their mid-20s trying to figure out who they are and what they want from their lives. Although these characters seem loosely connected with one another at the beginning of the book, Sally Rooney achieves to bring these characters together to form an intriguing plot in which the characters deal with establishing relationships and figuring their identities throughout the way. What I liked the most about the novel was the use of realism as a tool to display the imperfections of life without filtering the parts that may seem flawed. Unlike the popular culture that is presented in the media; none of the characters in the book is built perfectly. They deal with mental health issues, family/friend problems, breakups, relationships and most importantly identity crisis. When all of these are combined together, the novel may seem pessimistic, but as its title suggests the characters are in search of a beautiful world in which they seek assurance and love.
