Fire sacrifices in which animals or even men are burned wholly, holocausts, are characteristic of the religion of the West Semites, the Jews, and Phoenicians. Children were still burned in Carthage in historical times, and in Jerusalem the daily burning of two one-year-old lambs in the temple became the centre of the divine service.
