In justifying the repression of the working class Freud reasons that "one cannot dispense with the domination of the masses by the minority any more than one can dispense with the application of external compulsion for productive labor, for the masses are lazy and unendowed with reason, they do not like to give up their drives, cannot be persuaded by argument of the necessity, and individually encourage each other not to give up their anarchic ways" (1940-68.14: 328).
