work is a blessing for the sufis, first, it keeps us in humility, the greatest of all the virtues. it reminds us that we are like all other men. work binds us to the common lot, and for that we are grateful. then, work can bring heaven and earth together, through the attention we have toward it. when we fashion a flute or handle a bird with presence of mind, something is added to god’s creation. matter is raised up, ennobled by the attention we give it. in that way, we become cocreators with god of the material world; we raise both it and ourselves into the domain of spirit, which some also call love. that is why hassan shushud will be making flutes until the day he dies. he loves this mortal world with the same love he has for the invisible realms.
