The book switches between present-day Reggie and childhood Reggie. The book begins with 39-year-old Reggie receiving a call that his mother has finally been found. This news devastated him as his mother was kidnapped by a strange serial killer 25 years ago. However, his body was never found. Until Reggie gets a call. Two years have passed, but suddenly Reggie's mother Vera reappears at the homeless shelter. Reggie finally has a chance to settle accounts for what happened to his mother all those years ago. But there is another thing: his mother is alive but will die of cancer. She leaves her successful life as an architect and leaves her promising long-time boyfriend to care for her disconnected and very ill mother.
