Madness!
Stefan Zweig-Chess Undoubtedly Stefan Zweig is one of the writers who reflects human emotions and handles them deeply. I can say that after reading Metamorphosis (I mentioned it to everyone and made a review of ), I couldn’t escape from its influence, and cannot still. It mentioned the value of human beings. It emphasized Gregor himself. Franz Kafka depicted the protagonist, Gregor as a ghost to reveal whether Gregor thinks of himself or considers what people say. Similarly, Chess succeeded in being one of my priorities with an emphasis on humans and his struggle to be healthy. What I mean by the word ‘healthy’? Okay. I want to ask a question to you. Do passions keep a person alive? Can they make a person mad as well? I will try to guess what your answer is. What if passions encourage a person to span a good life, can passions cause to the point he will suffer as well? That is what Zweig emphasizes. Zweig deals with Dr. B. in the book to show how strong and intelligent he is in the middle of nowhere, on the verge of insanity… Is it possible for a person to be mad and lose functions of the brain stemming from solidity and speechlessness? Maybe if he couldn’t find the chess book in the pocket of the guard, despair and loneliness would bring about madness! ---“Was that chess or madness in the cell?!” I think that there would not be any problem if the passion did not turn to jeopardy, and they do not symbolize the worst moments. The reason he is still smart and makes proper sentences in this isolated life is chess. He continuously studied it. He contemplated the chess board in his mind without real tools. He solved its rules and how to play on his own. And this passion went on in that way. He was imprisoned by the Nazis who has pressure on Austria to get important knowledge about the country. After being released, for a long time, he did not touch on chess. Nevertheless, he still has much more knowledge about it—the tournament in the ship where, the chess champion, Czentovic played. I want to add information about Czentovic. The champion had Dyslexia in early childhood. He is also an orphan and was raised by a priest. Hence, he is emotionally dull. What we get from that is although a person had the worst experiences, he can be sophisticated and successful in his life. Not giving up and not humiliating yourself. Do not ignore when people humiliate you, they are impermanent. What is stable is yourself. Always give value to yourself. It makes me feel good to say these words thanks to Czentovic. Anyway, In the course of the tournament, Czentovic and his fans competed, and a noise occurred. It was a warning for the next step. Well, who is this? This is Dr. B. This is a person who doesn’t refrain from making the warning. What steps he took is always appreciated by the crowd. It is so obvious that he is much more talented than even the champion. Then as you can guess, the tournament happened between the champion and him. He knew that he should not play chess again after the long years. Furthermore, this could lead to madness like what his doctor said. Despite this, He started to play but something started to change. He started to act violently. This should immediately end. If not, the madness would grab him. ---“I do not want to fall again into that passionate chess fever which I recall with nothing but horror!” Because it was a hard time everyone could not overcome it. The things that encouraged him to live were a board and some small pieces. ---Irony--- This is the last book Zweig wrote before his death. He put an end to his life with his wife. This confused some readers, as well as me. Because he mentions the struggles and challenges of being alive in this book, moreover, he deals with human psychology in detail. I wish you to have your passions in the right conditions and pursue them without going crazy.
