Why did the Germans begin the illegal and immoral war in 1914? It was simple: they thought they could win and seize foreign territory as their reward. Historical opinions have sometimes made the First World War seem like a muddle where everyone was to blame. Kautsky realized that the war really was Germany’s fault in both a legal and a moral sense. Its neighbours were only defending themselves against unjustified aggression.
