In 1929, Hubble spotted a special class of stars whose speed of brightening and fading indicated their distance. Hubble concluded that Andromeda was far beyond the Milky Way. He had discovered the building blocks of the universe: ‘galaxies’ – great islands of stars of which we now know our Milky Way is one among trillions.
