I have always wondered about the celebrity life. Not that I believe there is a particular pattern to being one, aside from having talent and the guts to expose their personal lives to all of us. Evelyn’s life is a classic celebrity myth, at least that is what I believe. All that drama and jazz is so stereotypical in a sense, but intriguing at the same time. So, we follow her as she opens up about her secrets and we keep wondering what the heck will surprise us. To be honest, I wasn’t that impressed by one of the surprises the writer offered, because I already had a guess right when I saw the title of the book. Maybe the title makes the book predictable or maybe I connected the dots with something else I had in mind, but certainly didn’t impress me as much as it should’ve. The book tells more than a simple life, it focuses on Evelyn Hugo; the astonishing princess of Hollywood. A woman you would think as perfect, a person who would have zero problems because she can get anything anytime, she is rich, and successful. But the background is painfully complicated and full of sacrifices (cliché as it is). Evelyn lives solely for her desire to accomplish her goal. Although she loves and enjoys life on the way, she sacrifices so much, even those things that bring her love and joy, for a stupid golden statue. This woman is no saint but at least she is aware of it and she doesn’t act innocent or blame it on others. I wasn’t really satisfied with the end. That’s why I’m not giving it five stars. I did not predict it but I wasn’t touched either. Obviously it wasn't gonna be light considering she labels herself as an evil person/ All those chapters Evelyn keep saying it was something horrible. Anyone could and would do what she did so… But the book was absorbing, it didn't require much energy to hold on to because it kept making you wonder about Evelyn's whereabouts. Who's she gonna marry now? What's gonna happen now? Is she gonna get the Oscar now? Will they find out about her true self?
