A brilliant collection of short stories. Ted Chiang is an important person in contemporary science-fiction literature. In this era, we don't really see people writing fiction especially sci-fi and fantasy.
I've heard about the film Arrival but I wanted to watch it after reading the book. The film is directly inspired by "Story of Your Life" in the book. Though many people seem to focus solely on that story, it is not my favourite and there are great stories in the book. My favourite is definitely "Understand" and followed by "Tower of Babylon" which won the 1991 Nebula Award for Best Novelette. Don't get me wrong, "Story of Your Life" was also a brilliant story that revolves around an interesting idea.
The best thing about the book, for me, is the things in the stories are very much possible considering our technology today. Chiang has an amazing imagination and vast knowledge about a variety of things. I've read that he spent 5 years learning about linguistics just to write "Story of Your Life." That is pure dedication and he deserves respect and admiration. The other stories are also based on other sciences and they are very believable because Chiang provides you with many information.
Since it is my favourite story, I'll mention "Understand." The story revolves around a man who is experimented on. People created a drug that allows you to heal your brain damage and make you much more smarter. Our protagonist is one of the subjects who volunteered to take the drug. After becoming more intelligent each second, he decides to quit the program and do things his own way. I'll let you read the rest yourself. The thing that I really liked was the whole process of getting smarter. He does not instantly reach genius level instead, he studies and reads a lot. He is, of course, much faster learner than others but he is not perfect. Overall, this one and also the other stories are all wonderful and you should definitely read the book.
